The holiday decorations have been stored away and now you find yourself looking at your space in a whole new perspective. Start the new year off by changing up your space with pops of color. Stay on trend and consider introducing vibrant colors like The Pantone Color Institute’s 2018 color of the year, Ultra Violet!

If you are living in a rental where you are not allowed to paint, it doesn’t mean you can’t bring brilliant colors into your space. Here are some tips on how to add simple pops of color without picking up a paintbrush:

  • Don’t be afraid to experiment with color. Have fun with adding color with throw pillows, curtains, etc. If you end up not liking it you can switch it out for something else.
  • Stick with the 60-30-10 rule. Most aesthetically pleasing spaces follow this percentage break down. The 60 percent hue – which should be a neutral – unifies the colors. Most rental properties will already have a neutral tone on the walls and a neutral carpet or hardwood floors. The 30 percent provides visual interest and the 10 percent adds that bit of sparkle or vibrancy, such as Pantone’s Ultra Violet 2018 color of the year. Vases and throw pillows are examples of where the 10 percent would have its place in the space.
  • Mix up the prints. Using small scale prints in the same color family on pillows, rugs and curtains is a great way to add color and interest.
  • Use orange, red and yellow in small doses. These colors invoke the feeling of hunger and are commonly used in fast-food restaurants. If you do decide to go with one of these then try using a pastel version of it to tone it down.
  • Art is key! Big, colorful pieces of art will instantly brighten up a room. You can play off that art and use it as your inspiration for the rest of the space.
  • Update with do-it-yourself seat cushions. Update your dining chairs or bar stools with fun, vibrant fabric. There are plenty of tutorials online that will guide you through the process.
  • Bring nature inside. Miniature trees and succulents are making a comeback and will add some life to your space.
